Our story

It started with a project for my daughter

It all started with a pattern I designed for my amazing, wonderful, independent-minded daughter.

Coco Chanel Quote Cross Stitch Chart-What She Said Stitches

While I was stitching this pattern, I was intrigued by the idea of “spreading the word” by making it available to other mothers and daughters. My intelligent and entrepreneurial offspring was already selling her own designs on Etsy, so I decided to make it available in the same fashion.

Then I designed another, and another, and soon I was seeking out more inspirational and motivational messages that would make up a collection of patterns.

As I stitched the first patterns, an image began to take shape in my mind of older women, perhaps teachers or mothers and grandmothers, leading a group of younger women as they learned to stitch and at the same time were informed about the feminist movement – from the “first wave” of feminists in the late 1800s and early 20th century, to the “second wave” that emerged in the 1960s and 70s, to today’s icons and young leaders who carry on the work for gender equality.

"Stitchin' Mama" Vicki is a proud feminist veteran of the 1970s and 80s fight for equality who enjoys a traditionally feminine pastime, cross stitch. A B-school graduate inspired by "second wave" feminists, she is a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and nomadic writer who spends lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada... except when she is at her trailer parked on the prairie near Ryley, AB.

"Stitch Witch" Carson is her daughter, a 21st-century feminist, who lives in the wilderness and occasionally appears at the forest's edge to deliver prophecies and blog posts.
